how it all began

SCROLL DOWN

how it all began

In 2012, our founder, Carol Cooke, set off for Africa to make a documentary for Creative Scotland and Al Jazeera capturing the Female Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Uganda. From the barefoot straw bag designer to the country’s first-ever female Funeral Director, Barefoot in Business is a film that aims to present an alternative and empowering portrait of Uganda - a world away from aid and Aids and reveal what life is like as a woman in business and, what it takes to be the best. Is it a matter of making millions and building a business empire or simply making ends meet and making a difference in the face of adversity?

My background is in filmmaking and film education. I set up my first production company with big ambitions of changing the world but absolutely no business experience. I didn’t go to business school so these women were my education in entrepreneurship. I learned so much from them while I was filming that it simply didn’t feel right just to walk away, wish them luck, and move on to my next project.

It especially didn’t make sense to do so when the response from everyone who watched the film was so overwhelmingly positive - “Where can I buy these products? How can I support these women?” - and, when the message from the women themselves was so clear:

“We want your orders, not your aid.”

With that the concept for Barefoot in Business was born - a unique one-stop shop where these amazing entrepreneurs can sell their products and showcase their stories - all the while helping inspire and educate a next generation of socially conscious and self-assured entrepreneurs here in the UK.
